The Marangu Route, often referred to as the Coca Cola Route, is the most established trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that provides hut accommodation, offering a bit more comfort compared to other camping routes. Over five days, climbers experience a variety of landscapes from tropical rainforest and moorland to alpine desert before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. While the trail itself is considered moderate in difficulty, the short duration makes acclimatization more challenging. This route is perfect for those seeking a scenic and supported trek with basic sleeping facilities.

The adventure begins on this day with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate, where registration and introductions to the trekking team take place. From there, the hike ascends through the lush rainforest, often accompanied by sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys and colorful birdlife. After approximately 4 to 5 hours of trekking, the day ends at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, you ascend from the rainforest into the open moorland. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant lobelias and scenic views of the twin peaks: Mawenzi and Kibo. The hike takes around 6 to 7 hours, ending at Horombo Hut (3,720 meters), where you’ll have dinner and rest in preparation for the next stage.
The trail today leads through an arid alpine desert, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. It’s a steady, long trek of 6 to 7 hours with increasing altitude and thinner air. Upon reaching Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters, you’ll have an early dinner and rest as much as possible before the midnight summit attempt.
You’ll begin your summit push just after midnight, climbing slowly in the cold, dark early morning hours. After a steep ascent to Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters), those with energy and determination continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the roof of Africa. Enjoy the breathtaking sunrise, take photos, and celebrate your achievement before descending back to Kibo Hut for a short rest. After lunch, continue the descent to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.
Your final day takes you back through the moorland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate, where your climb began. The descent takes around 6 to 7 hours. At the gate, you’ll receive your well-earned summit certificate before being transferred back to Arusha or Moshi by the Chacal Expedition team.
