The Machame Route, also known as the Whiskey Route, is one of the most popular and scenic trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike the Marangu Route, this trail offers camping accommodations, giving climbers a more adventurous trekking experience. Over six days, hikers traverse diverse landscapes including lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The Machame Route is considered challenging due to its steeper trails, but its longer itinerary allows for better acclimatization and a higher summit success rate.

Your adventure begins with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate for registration and a briefing with the trekking team. The hike starts in the dense rainforest, where you’ll spot exotic birds and playful monkeys. After about 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp (3,010 meters) for dinner and overnight camping.
After breakfast, begin a steady ascent through heath and moorland, with panoramic views opening up along the trail. Today’s trek takes around 5 to 6 hours, ending at Shira Camp (3,845 meters), located on a high plateau. Enjoy dinner and rest under the starry African sky.
This is an important acclimatization day. After breakfast, hike for 6 to 7 hours, gradually climbing to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960 meters). The route follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, helping your body adjust to the altitude. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp, set beneath the stunning Barranco Wall.
Begin the day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that rewards you with breathtaking views. The trail continues through valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp (3,995 meters). This shorter trek of 4 to 5 hours provides additional time for acclimatization. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.
After breakfast, hike for 3 to 4 hours to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters), your final base camp before the summit. Rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak. At around midnight, the summit push begins a challenging yet rewarding journey.
At midnight, ascend slowly toward Stella Point (5,739 meters) before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement with sunrise views over the glaciers. After photos and rest, descend back to Barafu for a quick meal, then continue down to Mweka Gate via Mweka Camp. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate before returning to Arusha or Moshi.
