6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Marangu Route

6-Day Hike to Kilimanjaro Summit through Marangu Route

The 6-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route offers one of the most comfortable and scenic treks to Africa’s highest summit. Known as the Coca Cola Route, Marangu is the only path with hut accommodations, providing basic shelter and beds throughout the journey. Unlike the 5-day option, this extended itinerary includes an extra day for acclimatization at Horombo Hut, significantly increasing your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak. This route takes you through tropical rainforest, high moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters.

Day 1:Arusha/Moshi – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your safari begins with a scenic drive to Tarangire National Park, renowned for its massive elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and diverse wildlife. As you explore the park, enjoy game drives across open savannahs and riverine landscapes, spotting lions, giraffes, buffalo, and a variety of colorful birds. A picnic lunch in the heart of the park allows you to soak in the peaceful surroundings while photographing wildlife in their natural habitat. The day concludes with a drive to a lodge or camp near Ngorongoro, where you can relax and enjoy dinner under the vast African sky.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, you ascend from the rainforest into heath and moorland. The terrain becomes more open, and the air cooler and drier. As you climb higher, views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks begin to appear. The hike takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, and you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) in the late afternoon. Dinner is served, followed by a restful evening.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This is a full day at Horombo Hut to help your body adjust to the altitude. After breakfast, you take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge, reaching about 4,000 meters before returning to Horombo for lunch. The rest of the day is for rest and hydration. This acclimatization day is key to improving your chances of a successful summit. You spend a second night at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today’s trek leads you into the alpine desert. The trail passes between Mawenzi and Kibo, crossing the wide saddle that separates the two peaks. The landscape is stark and silent, with minimal vegetation. After 6 to 7 hours of walking, you arrive at Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters in the early afternoon. Dinner is served early, and you rest in preparation for the midnight summit push.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Horombo Hut

You wake just before midnight for your summit attempt. After tea and biscuits, the climb begins under the stars. The steep path to Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) is slow and challenging, but reaching the rim of the crater is a major achievement. From there, it takes about an hour and a half more to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. You’ll have a brief moment to enjoy the sunrise and take photos before descending to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch. Afterward, continue descending to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Arusha/Moshi

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the heath and rainforest zones. The trail leads back to Marangu Gate, where you sign out and receive your summit certificate green for Gilman’s Point and gold for Uhuru Peak. Your driver will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
