The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking views and excellent acclimatization opportunities. Starting from the western side of the mountain, this route traverses remote rainforest and moorland before joining the Machame trail near Shira Plateau. Over seven days, climbers experience diverse landscapes, from lush forest and volcanic rock formations to alpine desert and glaciers, culminating in a rewarding summit at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 meters above sea level. The Lemosho Route is moderately difficult but provides one of the highest success rates for reaching the summit.

After breakfast, transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration and a briefing with the trekking team. The hike begins in pristine rainforest, where you may encounter monkeys, bushbucks, and rich birdlife. After a 3 to 4-hour trek, you’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 meters) for dinner and overnight stay.
Continue the climb through forest and transition into heather and moorland zones. The day’s trek lasts 5 to 6 hours, gradually ascending to Shira Camp 1 (3,610 meters) on the Shira Plateau. This area offers expansive views of Kibo Peak. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp 1.
Today’s hike is shorter, around 3 to 4 hours, across the Shira Plateau. This allows plenty of time for rest and acclimatization. You’ll ascend to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters), with spectacular views of Mount Meru in the distance. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp 2.
After breakfast, begin a long acclimatization hike, gradually climbing to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960 meters). The trek takes 6 to 7 hours, following the principle of “climb high, sleep low” to prepare for higher altitudes. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp, beneath the iconic Barranco Wall.
The day starts with an exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a non-technical scramble that rewards you with spectacular views. The trail continues through ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp (3,995 meters). This shorter day of 4 to 5 hours provides additional acclimatization time. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.
Trek for 3 to 4 hours to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters), the final staging point before your summit attempt. Rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Just after midnight, begin the summit push, ascending slowly toward Stella Point (5,739 meters) before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. Witness the stunning sunrise, take photos, and celebrate your achievement. Afterward, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down through Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. At the gate, receive your summit certificate before returning to Arusha or Moshi.
