7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Machame Route

7 Days to the Roof of Africa via Machame Route

The 7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular treks to Africa’s highest peak. Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its challenging yet rewarding nature, Machame offers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and excellent acclimatization opportunities. Starting from the lush rainforest, the trail ascends through moorland and alpine desert, culminating in the ice-capped summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Over the course of seven days, you will trek through unique ecological zones, experience awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets, and challenge yourself to an unforgettable adventure. This route is ideal for fit hikers seeking both beauty and a higher chance of summit success, with ample time for proper acclimatization.

7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Machame Route

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, you will be transferred to the Machame Gate, where registration and briefing take place. Begin the trek through the dense rainforest, spotting unique flora and fauna, before reaching Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs into the moorland zone with stunning views of the Shira Plateau. The day’s hike offers gradual acclimatization, ending at Shira Camp where you will rest for the night.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters for an important acclimatization stop before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,976 meters. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with a climb up the famous Barranco Wall, offering panoramic views before continuing through alpine desert to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day to allow for acclimatization and preparation for the summit push.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Trek towards Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. Arrive early to rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt in the early hours, reaching Stella Point at sunrise and continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned rest or onward travel.
